NIA's public comment to NRC's proposed amendments to its regulations regarding new alternative emergency preparedness requirements for small modular reactors and other new technologies. (Comment ID: NRC-2015-0225-0287)
Updating an Outdated National Security Framework
In recent decades, the nuclear industry has become increasingly global, with companies and technologies flowing across borders. An early provision in nuclear law limits the ability of US allies to invest in nuclear innovation in the US. Repealing that provision, or allowing an exception for close allies, can unlock financing and other collaborations to enable the US nuclear sector to remain globally competitive.
Nuclear power plays a critical role in providing zero-carbon power for both the United States and South Korea. This report explores the future role of nuclear power in decarbonizing both countries, with a focus on policy lessons and potential areas of collaboration.
Streamlining NRC NEPA Reviews for Advanced Reactor Demonstration Projects
This report identifies some of the challenges that have been apparent in NEPA reviews of commercial nuclear energy projects. It makes several policy and operational recommendations that would support more efficient review for first-of-a-kind advanced nuclear demonstration projects while still protecting the environment.
Establishing Interface Requirements for "Major Portions" Standard Design Approvals
This report provides guidance on how advanced reactor vendors can define interface requirements between portions of a plant design when using the “standard design approval” process to seek Nuclear Regulatory Commission review of a major portion of their design. This facilitates a modular and staged approach to licensing that can be useful for some advanced nuclear programs. This report builds on prior NIA work to identify the opportunity associated with the standard design approval process and to provide guidance on how to exercise it.
In Search of a SpaceX For Nuclear Energy
NASA's commercial development programs have helped nurture a U.S. commercial launch industry. This report evaluates the successes of NASA's COTS program to identify potential lessons for commercializing the advanced nuclear industry. It proposes that DOE establish a similar program to enable federal procurement to drive commercialization.
In April 2019, NIA's Executive Director, Dr. Ashley Finan, testified before the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources for its "Hearing on U.S. Nuclear Energy and S. 903, the Nuclear Energy Leadership Act"
Multiple members of the US energy and national security establishment sent this letter to US Congress to discuss non-proliferation issues related to a 123 Agreement with Saudi Arabia
In February 2018, NIA's Executive Director, Dr. Ashley Finan, testified before the U.S. House of Represenatives Energy and Commerce Committee, Subcommittee on Energy for the hearing "DOE Modernization: Advancing the Economic and National Security Benefits of America's Nuclear Infrastructure"
This report provides recommendations for updating U.S. export controls, specifically Part 810, to promote enhanced nuclear trade and open export markets for advanced nuclear.
